Nearly 7 million Americans of all ages are walking around with undiagnosed diabetes, putting them at high risk for heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure and nerve damage.
"Many people don't know they have diabetes until it gets into a more advanced stage and, by then, the damage is hard to undo," says Michael Koren, MD, an endocrinologist with Advanced Care in Endocrinology & Diabetes in Colorado Springs. "Every adult over 45 should be tested for diabetes every three years, even if they feel fine."
4 Ways to Prevent Diabetes
1) Breastfeeding a baby for even one month cuts a mom's risk of diabetes in half.
2) Combining aerobic exercise and resistance training controls blood sugar better than either one alone.
3) Eating a Mediterranean-style diet controls diabetes more effectively than a low-fat diet.
4) Sleeping poorly is linked to an increased risk of diabetes.
Now while most of may be past the breastfeeding stage, we can take action and take better care of ourselves. My mother and brother both passed away from diabetic complications and my sister has the disease too, none of them took care of themselves. DO YOU?
